On Friday, May 8, President Obama made a visit to Watertown, South Dakota, to speak at the graduation ceremony of the Lake Area Technical Institute. I decided to head down to Watertown that day to talk with a couple of groups that were in attendance to protest; well maybe protest is too strong of a word. Most of those in attendance seemed to be there more to urge President Obama and others to hear their message.

Throughout this week I will have a series of blog posts centered around different conversation with these concerned citizens. To kick off this series of blog posts I thought it would be good to post some of the pictures of the moments I saw while in attendance.

The picture above was taken when the KXL protesters and citizens concerned about COOL decided to get together for a group shot. These are the two main groups I came to Watertown in order to speak with. Both groups are very passionate about their particular cause and are hoping to get their voices heard. This week I will have posts dedicated to what I heard from each group.

I won’t be doing a separate post on this. But this is the first time I had seen a teepee frame being erected. I had always wondered how it was done.  I was pretty amazed at how easy these gentlemen made it look.

Here is a picture of part of the line for those attending the ceremony. The line is much bigger than I could capture with the camera. On the left side of the picture the line continues for another block past what is seen. On the right side of the picture the line goes down at least two blocks.

One gentleman in attendance was bringing attention to the use of Benzene in gasoline. This is another topic I will do a post about this week.

The parking lots on the north side of LATI were all empty; except for some that were strategically placed to block the view of the protesters from those entering the building.

There were two anti-Obama protesters in attendance. Here is one of the two protesters that came just to speak against Obama.

There was also one citizen that showed up to show her support for Obama and his policies.

That concludes the brief photo tour of Friday’s events in Watertown. Throughout the week I will have a series of blog posts to follow-up on what the concerned citizens I spoke with had to say.
